St. Blaise Parish is a community that welcomes everyone with open arms. No matter who you are, no matter what your story is, no matter where you've been, you are welcome here. We are a community of reconciliation and peace. We hope that you find solitude and a home here with us.
The Mission of the Catholic Communities of St. Blaise and St. Brendan is to be a people dedicated to spreading the Good News of God's saving love to all, as we journey together in faith. As a sacramental people, united in the Eucharist, we seek to develop the full and active participation of all peoples and strengthen our relationship with Jesus Christ. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we strive to give witness to God's word and through the teachings of Jesus Christ actively follow the Gospel message by living the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.
Saint Blaise lived in the eighth century and was born into a rich and noble family. He was a well educated Physician who became the Bishop of Sebaste Armenia. At that time a new persecution of Christians began. St. Blaise received a message from God to leave his village and go to the mountains to escape persecution, which he did. One day, men hunting in the mountains found St. Blaise surrounded by sick animals. St. Blaise walked among them and cured the animals of their illnesses. The men recognized St. Blaise and captured him to take back to the village to stand trial. On the way back he witnessed a wolf with a pig in its mouth, which belonged to peasant woman. St. Blaise asked the wolf to release the pig and the wolf did at the request of St. Blaise. When St. Blaise was sentenced to be starved to death, the woman in gratitude, sneaked into prison with food and candles for St. Blaise. While in prison he helped sick prisoners and saved a child who was choking on a fish bone. Saint Blaise refused to renounce his faith and was killed by the governor. St. Blaise is the patron saint of wild animals because of his care for them and of those with throat maladies.
Located in the central part of the Town of Bellingham, Massachusetts, St. Blaise Parish was established in 1962. At that time, the community was made up primarily of Boston transplants looking for relatively inexpensive homes to raise families. The new parish would help solidify the Catholic population served by Assumption Parish (now closed) in the extreme south part of town, and St. Brendan Parish in the northern part of town.
From the outset, the St. Blaise Parish community was blessed with caring and foresighted priests and local and effective lay leadership who fostered peace, community building, and outreach.
Over the years, St. Blaise has become known as a progressive Catholic community with engaged parishioners. Programs, ministries, and traditions have grown and changed over the years and currently include Parish Council, Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, Ladies of St. Anne, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Music Ministry and RCIA, helping to make our parish stronger and attracting new parish membership.
